Ethics

Eating:

At CrabBag we like eating pretty much everything the sea has to offer - fish, crab, lobster, squid, shellfish... (it's a very long list if you're the adventurous type). If you disapprove of eating animals then we're probably not going to be top of your Christmas card list. However, if, like us, you do enjoy eating things whilst believing that animals deserve to be treated with respect then we think you'll like CrabBag. To us, collecting crabs, lobster and shellfish is one of the most enjoyable things you can do. A summer's day diving, snorkelling or fishing followed by a beach barbeque of free, ethically sourced and sustainable food is about as good as it gets (you can find some of our favourite recipes here). CrabBag ensures your catch is of legal size, keeps its safe underwater and then provides a low-stress environment in which to transport it to the cooking pot.

Killing:

People often ask about humanely dispatching crabs and lobsters. There is some debate about this but researchers generally agree that plunging live lobsters or crabs into boiling water will kill them very quickly. We prefer to follow the RSPCA guidance which suggests that lobster should be placed in a deep freeze them for at least two hours before cooking. This renders them unconscious, the theory being that the boiling water then kills them before they even wake up. Alternatively (and recommended by the RSPCA for crabs) you can kill them pre-cooking by piercing. Most good fish cook books will show you how to do this.

Sustainability:

If you are interested in the sustainability of fish stocks click the following link to be taken to the Marine Conservation Society's website and its current "Fish to Eat" list http://www.fishonline.org/advice/eat/
